You wouldn't guess it, but advertising and baseball have a lot in common. Commonality #1 in my life being that neither had much prominence in my life until about 2 years ago. I got into advertising because....well you have to choose a major at some point, right? (but I love it so it's okay) And baseball is thanks to a couple of sports-crazed friends, the main culprit being the alter ego of a one, "Garth Carlton."
Commonalities outside of my life run the gamut from working in tight teams, to developing specialty players who excel at one particular task at the expense of others, and even to their primary book-keeping and research methods (the ever popular and fashionable world of statistics!).
The impetus behind this similarity searching is a simple one: Another summer has dawned, and all of a sudden I have some big ol' chunks of gooey time with nothing to wash it down with. So I have decided to fill it with my new-found past-times: baseball and advertising.
Now before you start complaining about how boring commercials are and how much your butt hurts from sitting in the stands at baseball games and how you dropped your hotdog, just shuttup so I can finish talking.
Basically, I plan to use this blog as a way to keep my advertising knowledge sharp by practicing my writing skills and by staying up-to-date with current events and campaigns that I enjoy or question. Baseball is just a fun theme I threw in, though I'll talk about that sometimes too.
"Why the title?" The title of my blog, "Highly Touted Pitching," is a play on words. In baseball, you have pitchers. Every once and a while you run across a highly praised pitcher working his way up through the minors. This person you would dub, a "highly touted pitcher," because they have a ton of promise but haven't quite proven themselves yet. In the advertising world, you make a living off of "pitching" ideas to clients as well as consumers. A sought after advertising firm or employee then could also be referred to as a "highly touted pitcher."
There ya have it. Should there still be any confusion about this blog feel free to comment! I look forward to and welcome any and all comments or criticisms. So if if we're all done pre-gaming, put your hand to your chest, sing a lil' National Anthem, and let's play ball!
This is awesome!!! Well thought out and the connection between advertising and baseball is perfect. I'll have to fill you in on my experience with advertising agencies so far.
